Harnessing innovative technologies to meet future challenges - Internet for Lawyers Newsletter

#artificialintelligence

A new joint report entitled A New National Purpose, which explores how the UK can harness innovative technologies to meet future challenges, has recently been published by Tony Blair and William Hague. The "cross-party" report argues that we are currently undergoing a new form of Industrial Revolution "as developments in artificial intelligence (AI), biotech, climate tech and other fields begin to change our economic and social systems". It calls for policymakers to mitigate the consequent threats whilst embracing opportunities. Several of its proposals touch upon the convergence of law and technology, and we will consider some of these aspects below. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given Tony Blair's foiled aspirations to introduce digital ID during his premiership, much of the press attention has focused on the report's call for the government to "provide a secure, private, decentralised digital-ID system for the benefit of both citizens and businesses".

How Does Artificial Intelligence Work? And How Is It Disrupting The Tech Industry?

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence has been making headlines lately as new tools that allow you to create art or content from text prompts are released to the public. The pace of AI-related innovations appears to be increasing as new tools are coming out faster than ever. The entire tech industry is paying close attention as every innovation can become a new disruption to the current way of things. We're going to look at how artificial intelligence works and how it's altering the tech industry in a major way--plus, how to get started investing with AI. At the most superficial level, AI is about using computer systems to handle tasks that humans have normally performed throughout history.

COROID: A Crowdsourcing-based Companion Drones to Tackle Current and Future Pandemics

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Due to the current COVID-19 virus, which has already been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), we are witnessing the greatest pandemic of the decade. Millions of people are being infected, resulting in thousands of deaths every day across the globe. Even it was difficult for the best healthcare-providing countries could not handle the pandemic because of the strain of treating thousands of patients at a time. The count of infections and deaths is increasing at an alarming rate because of the spread of the virus. We believe that innovative technologies could help reduce pandemics to a certain extent until we find a definite solution from the medical field to handle and treat such pandemic situations. Technology innovation has the potential to introduce new technologies that could support people and society during these difficult times. Therefore, this paper proposes the idea of using drones as a companion to tackle current and future pandemics. Our COROID drone is based on the principle of crowdsourcing sensors data of the public's smart devices, which can correlate the reading of the infrared cameras equipped on the COROID drones. To the best of our knowledge, this concept has yet to be investigated either as a concept or as a product. Therefore, we believe that the COROID drone is innovative and has a huge potential to tackle COVID-19 and future pandemics.

CaixaBank and Microsoft establish an innovation laboratory for AI solutions and the metaverse

#artificialintelligence

CaixaBank and Microsoft have signed a strategic joint innovation agreement intended to promote the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to new financial solutions, as well as to create new and innovative work environments in the metaverse. The agreement will see the two companies start up an AI Innovation Lab, with particular involvement from CaixaBank Tech โ€“ the tech company launched in 2021 to advance the technological evolution of the CaixaBank Group. This IT subsidiary of CaixaBank has a team of professionals specialising in the application of AI for the financial sector, as well as its Centre of Excellence to promote innovation in this field. The new Laboratory, located in Barcelona, will work in coordination with Microsoft's AI Research and Development (R&D) hub also located in the city, which employs nearly a hundred software developers, data scientists, and machine learning specialists. The AI Innovation Lab will focus on developing concept tests, prototypes, and use cases to explore how the application of AI technologies can disrupt financial services.

Communicating innovation: What can we do better?

Robohub

Have you ever seen a bridge collapse on TV? We only care about inspection and maintenance if it does not work. However, robotics are changing the inspection & maintenance landscape, and significant societal and political implications follow the magnitude of innovation. To pay due attention to these developments, the communication on innovation in robotics for inspection & maintenance has to play a role in informing and influencing the target groups for the successful adoption of robotics technologies. The question on what role communications play in forming the perception of innovative technology was discussed in the workshop "Communicating innovation: What can we do better?" on May 25th, 2022.

Invoxia BioMetric Smart Dog Collar: AI-Based Wearable Monitors Dog's Heath, Well-Being, Whereabouts

International Business Times

As humans take advantage of innovative technology to monitor their activities, dog owners are now turning to smart wearable technology to keep track of their furbabies' health, well-being and whereabouts. While there are lots of apps that help reveal dogs' locations and monitor their health, we seldom see an app that offers both. Interestingly, the French consumer electronics company Invoxia is set to launch a new product called BioMetric Smart Dog Collar that promises to offer the best of both worlds for your beloved dogs and much more. The Invoxia BioMetric Smart Dog Collar is the first in the smart wearable consumer pet market to use artificial intelligence (AI). It is equipped with accurate accelerometers and cutting-edge miniaturized radar sensors with embedded Depp Neural Network capabilities.

How Data Science is Driving Digital Transformation Now

#artificialintelligence

In an increasingly competitive world, we should have a deep understanding of the business in which we operate, how it is evolving, and the new innovations that we could embrace or build to remain competitive and conquer new market segments. To do this, we must be able to develop a clear vision of transformation that takes us to another level of performance. By embracing Digital Transformation, we will deal with artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning, virtual reality, and a lot of other innovative technologies. At first sight, it might even sound fearful to lead the business in such a complex and intricate direction. With this in mind, we will consider some strategies to better understand and take competitive advantage of the huge streaming of data in the current era of the digital revolution.

Insect farm uses artificial intelligence to promote food security

#artificialintelligence

"The events from this year and last have shown how fragile our global food system really is," said Fotis Fotiadis, CEO and co-founder of Better Origin, the UK-based insect mini-farm. Detailing the current food security outlook in Europe, Fotiadis relayed: " While we are still trying to digest how the pandemic has affected our global food supply chain, it is becoming more evident that we cannot rely solely on imported food products." The food industry currently places reliance of our animal feed sector on soy, most of which comes from South America. "A disturbance in the global soy supply chain can, therefore, have a dramatic impact on livestock production in the UK and EU," Fotiadis observed. The solution can be found in technologies that are being developed that allow for food and feed products to be grown locally.
